Interactive lights - Dune

Tag: Design process, Interaction designadmin @ 1:27 pm

Artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde has developed an interactive artwork of lights. The artwork is a huge collection of small lights that glow up when people pass by.

In the evening and night the small tunnels are dark for cyclists and pedestrians. The artwork responds when people walk by it through hidden sensors and microphones. 70% of the lights is activated by movement while the other 30% is activated by sound.

Although it is still under development, eventually it will be placed in a public site in the Dutch city Rotterdam.

The way how the lights interact with movement and sound could give people, especially women, a more safe feeling in such ‘dark’ places. The intensity of light responds to the amount of sound, so in case something happens screaming will light the place intensely.

A second advantage is the power consumption. Normally the lights in tunnels are on the whole night also when nobody uses the tunnel. With these configuration of software, sensors and lights the lights only work when the tunnel is used. Other companies have shown interest to use this on for instance highways.
